The Newmarket Results
A couple of months ago several members of PCRC took part in a short 4-card postal competition run by our friends up at Cambridgeshire Target Shooting Association, Fred & Sandra Haskett.
Here's how the Portsmouth City shooters did in the 2015 Newmarket Competition:

How much shooting does PCRC do over the summer?
The summer postal competitions are now well and truly under way. So how much shooting does Portsmouth City Rifle Club do over the summer?
(2 teams of 4, 10 cards each) (80 cards)
(8 individuals, 9 cards each) (72 cards)
(15 individuals, 9 cards each) (135 cards)
(3 individuals, 10 cards each) (30 cards)
317 cards = 3,170 competition shots.
So the answer is a lot! But we still expect that our coming winter season numbers will easily exceed this. Watch this space. ;-)

NSRA/RWS National Postal Competition Results
Winter is the season for most indoor postal competitions and now that we are well and truly into spring, the results are coming thick and fast.
Portsmouth City, as always, entered a team into the NRSA/RWS National Short Range League. This team of five was made up of Ian Cooper, Marian Nevatte, Adam Nevatte, Sarah Hart and Phil Upchurch. Our team, in Division 13 (of 23) shot well but ultimately came up short and had to settle for second place (a theme of this season for us it appears), losing to Pinewood Rifle Club in Berkshire.
Well done to our team who managed to place above Sunderland B, British Airways, Cumberland News and Colchester C. Hopefully we'll achieve those few extra points to win next year!

Hampshire Postal Results are in!
Over the winter months, the rifle teams of Hampshire shoot against each other in postal matches. Here's how it breaks down:
10 divisions
8 teams per division
5 shooters per team
14 rounds to shoot
Portsmouth City entered 3 teams this season (our shooters are eager for the competition!) and I'm delighted to say that of the 210 cards shot, there were no NCRs (meaning No Card Returned; meaning unshot cards).
On our A Team was Ian Cooper, Sarah Hart, Adam Nevatte, Marian Nevatte and Gordon Scruton. This team acquitted itself well in Division 2 and achieved 2nd place (losing first place to Shanklin), winning 9 rounds, drawing 1, and losing 4.
Our B Team (Lauren Haskett, Phil Upchurch, Steph Furness-Barr, Jonathan Rowe and David Owen) managed to pull themselves out of a mid-season slump and similarly achieve second place in Division 7 (Guernsey taking first place). They also won 9 rounds and lost 5.
The shooters on our C Team (Lou Stafford, Mike McCormick, Adi Fallows, Dave Reeves and Mike Hellyer) have taken advantage of the experience in Division 10 to really hone their competition skills and while they only achieved 5th place, having won 8 and lost 6, we've seen the quality of their shooting improve in leaps and bounds and look forward to even better shooting from them in the coming seasons. Well done to our sister club, Portsmouth Railway Rifle Club, for their C Team winning this division with 14 wins and no losses!

Competition within the club was fierce for the best average within the teams. In the A team there was a tie this year between Sarah Hart and Gordon Scruton (both achieving a final average of 97.79). Phil Upchurch achieved the best B Team average with 93.93, and Lou Stafford led the C Team with an average of 91.57.
We've thoroughly enjoyed this season of shooting and have seen a fantastic surge in achievement and energy amongst the teams. We look forward to building on this in the 2015 summer leagues and, come next year's winter leagues, we hope that many of our newer shooters will be able to make up additional teams that will increase Portsmouth City's contribution to the regional competitions.

Civil Service Competition Results (Winter 2014/15)
Well we've now got the results in from the scores and I'm very pleased to say that our team (Ian Cooper, Adam Nevatte, Marian Nevatte, Gordon Scruton) won their division; and that Jonathan Rowe won his division shooting individually.
We'll be putting in a large number of members new to shooting into the Civil Service postal competitions this summer as it will be a great opportunity to increase their competition experience and, hopefully, we'll have some similarly good news come the autumn!

PCRC gets the New Year off to a Winning Start!
Happy New Year everyone!
It's been a busy week for the club as we try to remember how to shoot after the haze of Christmas and New Year. This week on Tuesday our shooters have been shooting their various postal competition cards (postal meaning that we shoot on our range, our opponents shoot on their ranges, and the cards get posted to a 3rd-party marker).
On Wednesday we had our Beginners' Night, it was a great success and I believe a fun time was had by all. We are still to decide the date of our next taster night but it will probably be in April.

Last week we progressed further in the Arthur Lee Cup competition, but this was on account of our opponents, Havant, not being able to raise a team and so we won be default. Not the most satisfying way to progress in a tournament, but we'll take it.
However, last night last night was the return of the shoulder-to-shoulder matches.
It was a home match last night, against Fareham A. The clubroom was packed last night but it was a good atmosphere (with plenty of snacks - thank you Marian!) and the home team (us) managed to edge past Fareham to secure a victory and further improve the team average for the year.
Here were the scores:
Special congratulations go to Ian Cooper for another possible and to Lauren Haskett for a fine return to form. This marks PCRC's best team score so far this shoulder-to-shoulder season!
Our next match is Monday, against Sarisbury. Bring it on!

The Erika Lawrence Memorial Shoot
Ten of our shooters will be taking part in the smallbore postal competition organised by the Dorset Small-bore Rifle & Pistol Association to celebrate the life of Erika Lawrence, Dorest Ladies Captain, who passed away earlier this year.
Proceeds from the competition are going to the RNLI and we are delighted to say that the competition has raised over £300 for the Lifeboats!
For the shooters: there are 3 cards, they don't have to be all shot on the same day but they must be shot by 17th March 2015.

The 2015 NSRA/ELEY National Postal Competition
Those of you who agreed to shoot this should now find the cards in your pigeon-holes. There are 4 cards and they all must be shot on the same day and you must have them shot by 22nd December 2014. As this does put significant demand on the firing points please don't everyone leave it to the last week.
The competition is a knock out where those who shoot well move on to a second round of 4 cards, and if you do well on those you make it to the final, which is a shoulder-to-shoulder outdoor shoot during Bisley week - definitely an experience worth shooting well for!
Last year Portsmouth City Rifle Club managed to field 10 shooters for this competition (with one making it to the final at Bisley) and I'm delighted to say that this year we have upped that to 12!

Round Up of the 2014 Summer Season
Over the summer months, the Portsmouth City Rifle Club's shooters have been keeping busy taking part in the Civil Service, Portsmouth & District, and Hampshire Summer Postal Leagues, as well as the NSRA/ELEY national postal league. Outdoors, some of us took advantage of the good weather to participate in the Hampshire outdoor matches.
Overall it was a very productive summer of shooting that introduced a few of our newer shooters to postal competitions and allowed all of us to keep practising over the summer months in preparation for the 2014-15 winter leagues.
In the Civil Service leagues, we are delighted to report the following shooters won their divisions:
Phil Upchurch (Div 7)
Jonathan Rowe (Div 13)
Special mentions also go to the following shooters who came a very close second:
Stephanie Furness-Barr (Div 11)
Yanye Koji (Div 14)
In the P&D leagues, unfortunately none of our shooters placed first in their divisions but some did manage to come second (or joint-second). They were:
Mike McCormick (Div 8)
Jonathan Rowe (Div 9)
Yanye Koji (Div 10)
Hampshire Indoor Summer League
And in the Hampshire team summer league, our A team secured second place in the third division. They were Ian Cooper, Marian Nevatte, Adam Nevatte and Gordon Scruton. Many congratulations to Fareham's B team for winning the division. We'll see you again come Summer 2015! :-)
Outdoors, Gordon Scruton managed to shoot himself out of D Class by winning the division and the Holdaway Cup.
Finally, Jonathan Rowe, a relative newcomer to shooting managed to get to the final of the 2014 NSRA/ELEY national postal competition.
