New season, new range, new name, same mugs!

Portsmouth City, now incorporated into South Hants Rifle Club, had their first match on Thursday shooting under our new name, South Hants (City). In preparation for this, we spent a bit of time getting the range tidied up for our guests, HMS Excellent. Unfortunately our main range isn't quite ready yet, but work continues and we look forward to debuting our 4-point range soon!

Here's how we shot:
A solid win to start the season with a couple of almost-tonnes. :-) We look forward to our first away match on Monday against current champions, Sarisbury.
Sorry for the wait. Since the Sarisbury match, City has had a few further matches and we've now finished our the 2016-17 shoulder-to-shoulder season (which will also be our last season at the Hambrook St range). Our performance was a bit of a mixed bag of results if we're honest but it's not without its highlights. Here's how we did.

It's fair to say that we were outmatched on this one. We weren't quite able to get a full team together but congratulation to Havant for a very respectable winning score. A small note of congratulations should also go to Tom Sommerville for his first counted-in score.

So by this point, we'd shot 10 matches and lost 4. I wish I could say we turned it around after this, but there was one more defeat to come...

This time we really were reduced in numbers and could only muster a team of 6. It was a close match... but didn't go our way.

So where our defeat against Sarisbury meant we had to say goodbye to any hopes we had for winning the championship this year, these defeats against Havant and Railway meant we had to say goodbye to achieving runner-up, as we had last year.

Thankfully, the news gets better for City from here.
Wickham had started very strong this season but, like City, had encountered a slump mid-season. This was a home match for City, so we had the advantage and thankfully, we pressed it.
Thursday evening saw Portsmouth City's home match against the league champions, Sarisbury. City is still not at full strength and thus unable to field a complete team of eight. Here's how the match went:

So no embarrassments on either side but no tonnes either. Well done to Sarisbury for their win - it looks like it could be a close finish between them and Wickham by the end of the season as to who will take the championship.

With this defeat, City now has three losses this season and it is unlikely with Sarisbury and Wickham as strong as they are this year, we'll be in contention for either first or second place. That said, our current team average of 487.7 is a full one point higher than last year's average of 486.7, so we are improving, but perhaps not quite as much as a couple of our rivals.

Apologies for the delay in getting this match report out. It was City's turn to visit Chichester last Thursday for our away match against them. The last match saw us secure a convincing win against the most eastern of the Portsmouth & District teams (please take a moment to visit and 'like' the association's new Facebook page if you haven't already done so). However, that was a home match with a full team; this time around, Chichester had the home advantage and, owing to a number of reasons, the City team was far from full strength.

Here's how we did:
This was quite a score for City (our best this season and equalling our best last season). Congratulations always go to those, regardless of their team, who score a 100, in this case I. Cooper and L. Haskett, but special congratulations must go to Ms. Haskett for following up her first ever 100 with her first ever match 100! Well done, Lauren!

Commiserations go to Chichester but, as you can see, they definitely win in terms of attendance. Our next match is at home and against last year's champions, Sarisbury.Gordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04396346103987420775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8468965739381456179.post-44756357579597427932017-01-16T21:46:00.001+00:002017-01-16T21:46:41.289+00:00Arthur Lee Cup Round 2 - City vs Havant

Happy New Year everyone! Yes, it is now 2017 and technically a 'new year', however, over at the club we're right in the middle of the winter leagues and those include the Arthur Lee Cup matches, of which we had our second round match against Havant last Thursday (having beaten West Meon in the first round).

We had the home advantage once again and thankfully too advantage of it. So, City progresses to the next round! No double tonnes this time but we achieved a win and sometimes that's what counts. The regular shoulder-to-shoulder season starts this week and this Thursday we head for our away match against Chichester (who have recently put together a lovely new website). Wish us luck!

Thursday evening saw Portsmouth City's final match before the shoulder-to-shoulder season breaks for Christmas and New Year. This was actually the home match against Chichester that was supposed to start our season but due to bad traffic conditions had to be rescheduled. Here's how the shooting went:

City's score of 486 was sufficient to win the match and although it continues to nudge our season average down, now standing at 487.3, this is an improvement on our mid-season average last year of 486.7. Both clubs managed to field a complete team of eight and we look forward to facing Chichester again on their own range in 2017.

So we are now at the mid-point of the 2016/17 season. City has 10 championship points: 5 wins, 2 losses. In 2017, we'll face every team again and in face of stiff competition from Wickham, Sarisbury and Havant, we'll need to make sure we win every match to be in with a chance of winning the cup this year.

Over that time it has seen over 350 members call the current range their shooting home. And that number of people requires lots of kit and equipment. Unfortunately, the club has not been particularly good at adhering to that old 'one in, one out' rule when it comes to replacing old furniture or equipment, and thus we've slowly been amassing 40-years-worth of junk.

So it was time for a clear out! With the kind help of club members volunteering their Sunday morning (and afternoon if we're honest), we got through a lot of stuff and uncovered a little bit more club history in the process.

Tom, David, Shaun and Dave clearing out the second club room.

Some of us were surprised to learn that there is in fact... drum roll please... a second club room! We've spoken to veteran shooters in other clubs and they remember this room very well - apparently when shoulder-to-shoulder matches took place at Portsmouth City, the guest team were given their own club room and no interaction between teams was allowed! (How bizarre!) However, for some time now it has been used as a storeroom for everything whenever we had to tidy up. No longer!

We at Portsmouth City always have a great time when we shoot against Wickham, and we're of course very happy that Wickham has had such a successful shoulder-to-shoulder season with no losses so far (that is wins against West Meon A, Railway A, Havant, Chichester, Sarisbury and HMS Excellent A). However, after our loss against Railway A last week, City was keen to get another win under our belt and put an end to Wickham's unbroken streak of wins.

Here's how the match went.
So no outstanding scores but a solid performance from our shooters. Apologies to Wickham for stopping their clean sweep this half of the season.

We have one more match, the reschedule home match against Chichester, next Thursday and then comes the Xmas break. As the points stand now, we have 8 championship points as a result of 4 wins and wish us luck in getting two more next week against Chi!Gordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04396346103987420775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8468965739381456179.post-37486563208216263552016-11-25T17:39:00.000+00:002016-11-25T17:39:33.329+00:00Railway put an end to City's winning streak!

The headline says it all really. After four shoulder-to-shoulder matches coming away the victors, a less than stellar performance from City presented an opportunity for Portsmouth Railway Rifle Club that they seized and so not only has City suffered a defeat, but a home defeat. Oh the shame!

So by the very slightest of margins, Railway got the better of us. Well done to them. Our league team average slides down to 487.4 but with an away match against Wickham A (who are doing very well this season) on Monday, we've got to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and bring our A game for that match.

An hour or so up the road from us is the National Shooting Centre at Bisley. It's where the outdoor meeting of the year is held every year and Portsmouth City shooters know it mostly for the ELEY finals that we sometimes qualify to shoot in (see here and here).

However, one of our members pointed out that there was nothing stopping us from booking some practice time on the Lord Roberts Range, so this weekend, that's what we did!

The Lord Roberts Range is a 50m semi-outdoor range (the points are in the building, but the targets are outside) with electronic targets, like what the international matches are shot on (and if you haven't seen one of those, scroll down to the bottom of this post to see a couple of recent ISSF finals). The main difference between this sort of shooting and what we usually do - perhaps more than the distance or maybe even the weather conditions - is the number of shots: unlimited sighters, and 60 competition shots, all in one go.

When you are only used to doing a 10-shot indoor comp card, 60 shots on the trot is a whole other animal. Even if you are used to doing outdoor matches on cards, those are only 20 competition shots at a time and then there's a break while you change your card. That's not the case here; you can and have to just keep shooting and shooting and shooting. And when you finish, you get a big print out of all your shots, your final score, and the placement of all those shots.

This evening the City team made its way up to West Meon! After last week's Arthur Lee home match, this time they had the home advantage. Unfortunately, neither team was up to full strength so it was 5 against 7. Here were the scores:
This equals City's score against West Meon away last year and while 487 is not a bad team score (and a win is a win) it does edge our team average down a little to 488.3. Come on City, let's power through this and keep the scores in the 490s!

This evening, it was Ian Cooper who showed us all how it should be done! Well done for the ton!
To begin with, I thought it would be fun to go all the way back to the beginning and the first secretary of the club.

Felix Gordon Hoadley was born in Brighton in 1888 and when he was 25 years old he emigrated to New Zealand, but in that short period of adulthood, Private F. G. Hoadley made a big impact on shooting in Portsmouth. He was the secretary and, for five years before emigrating, the captain of the newly established Borough of Portsmouth Rifle Club (as our club was previously known).

Hoadley was an exceptional shot who represented Portsmouth at Bisley. In 1912, at the age of 24, he was within seven points of the King's Prize, achieving second place. In that same year, the members of the club presented Hoadley with a B.S.A. rifle on the occasion of his marriage to Maud Smith. It was only a year later that the club would say goodbye to their captain, secretary and cornerstone of their A team. So important and well-liked was he that a 'smoking concert' was held in his honour at the "Cobden" Hotel on Arundel St (likely the Cobden Arms) attended not only by members of the Borough Rifle Club but by members of other clubs in the district as well. It was at this event that he was presented with a silver watch with the following engraving:

"presented to F. G. Hoadley by the members of the Borough of Portsmouth Rifle Club, as a mark of esteem, June 1913"

On top of this, a purse of gold was presented for Hoadley's son, born that same month (Portsmouth Evening News, 26th June, 1913).

Hoadley emigrated with his new family to the Dominion of New Zealand, a part of the British Empire, but still had every intention of returning to Bisley in the future to represent his new adopted homeland. Unfortunately, with the advent of war the following year, it is unlikely he was able to do so. He nonetheless maintained his shooting status, being described as "one of the finest marksmen in New Zealand" (New Zealand Evening Post, 18th October, 1917). Sadly, his new life in the Antipodes was not long lived and Hoadley died of pneumonia in 1917 at the age of 29.

It's humbling to think that the organisations, clubs and teams we are involved with setting up and fostering in their early years may potentially live on as much as a century after we're gone. Certainly, a number of individuals have made enormous contributions to our rifle club over the last century, but from what can be gleaned from the archives, F. G. Hoadley's efforts at the beginning were important in getting it all started. Thanks, Felix!

Tonight we hosted Havant at home. After losing to Sarisbury in our first match of the season, we've been keen to get a winning momentum going. Here's how we did:
Congratulations to Sarah Hart for her ton (and for her wonderful blueberry muffins!). This score of 491 marks our best score of the season so far, and our best showing against Havant for a number of seasons. You might notice a familiar name in Havant's ranks: one of our own, our treasurer and former captain, Marian Nevatte. We're happy that she's settled in her new club... but we weren't about to go easy on her in these matches. ;-)

The season is now in full swing and the matches and various competition cards are coming thick and fast. Keep an eye out for more news about various shoots over the coming weeks.

Last Thursday marked City's first match against HMS Excellent in a few seasons, after HMS Excellent A were promoted to Division 1 at the end of last season. It was a home match and here were the scores:
So City finally gets a win on the board although the team average wasn't helped by this match and we can only hope that we bring our A game again next week's rivals - Havant.

It was great to see HMS Excellent again in Division 1 and we look forward to the away match on the Tipner range later in the season.Gordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04396346103987420775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8468965739381456179.post-90523349111881028842016-10-17T22:44:00.001+01:002016-10-17T23:08:57.189+01:00The Sarisbury Away Match - City's 2016/17 Shoulder-to-Shoulder Season Gets Started

City's shoulder-to-shoulder season had a bit of a misstep last week as our first match, a home match against Chichester, had to be cancelled at the last moment due to a particularly nasty traffic accident on the A27. We'll reschedule that match for later in the season, but this did mean that our season started off with an away match against the reigning league champions, Sarisbury.

Last year's matches against Sarisbury often left City wanting (see match reports here, here and here). So how did we do tonight?

G. Barber (95)
M. Holdway (97)
I. Kuprov (99)
<strike>P. Fitzsimmons (94)</strike>

I. Cooper (96)
<strike>J. Rowe (94)</strike>
<strike>T. Sommerville (79)</strike>

So Portsmouth City is not off to the best of starts but with 489 we still managed to shoot well above last year's team average of 486.7 so there is definitely cause for hope. Many congratulations to Sarisbury for edging a win and well done to Matt Guille and Gordon Scruton for the possibles.

Special apologies go to Tom Sommerville, who on his first ever shoulder-to-shoulder match had to shoot in a borrowed jacket with an unfamiliar scope. Sorry, Tom, I'll remember your jacket next time! :-)

Last year, Portsmouth City’s A Team was very pleased to win Division 1 of the summer postal league. We would have been similarly pleased to defend our title this summer but had to settle for 3rd place this year – well done to Windsor Rifle Club and Fareham Rifle Club’s A teams for coming 1st and 2nd respectively. The upside of this competition was that we still beat Sarisbury (which doesn’t happen very often)!

Unfortunately, the summer postal leagues are never as well subscribed as the winter leagues, leaving fewer divisions and therefore meaning that teams of a wide range of ability are forced to compete against each other. This was the case for Portsmouth City’s B team - M. McCormick, D. Reeves, T. Rowe and D. Herron (with T. Sommerville very kindly subbing in for one round) - but these shooters should hold their heads up high that they competed, got all their cards shot, and all improved their shooting as is reflected by their improved averages of the second half of the season, compared with the first.

The Newmarket shoot is a short 4-card competition that happens between February and May (yes, a little bit before summer technically, sorry) and this year Portsmouth City had 11 people competing. The club was very proud to have a number of their shooters placed in this competition. Gordon Scruton won the B Class and there was success further down the classifications as well.

Tom Sommerville & Tamsin Rowe both newcomers to the
sport and with less than a year of experience under their belts, showed that
there is certainly some raw talent that the Portsmouth City team will be
looking to develop and capitalise on over the next few years. Tamsin
won the E Class with a very respectable score of 369 (out of 400), beating Tom,
who came runner up, by only one point!

The Hampshire Long Range Open Meeting

In preparation for the ELEY finals at Bisley (see part 1) a number of our shooters were keen to get a bit of outdoor practice in beforehand. As a result, a few of us went up to Andover Rifle Club to enjoy a fine day of shooting on their outdoor range.

This was a Double Dewar match, meaning two cards shot at 50m and two cards at 100yds. Each card has a maximum of 200 points on it, so final scores are out of 800. The shooting is a little different from the standard indoor shooting, which we do at 25yds; the targets are further away but they are also bigger, and therefore because they are bigger, we can shoot more than one competition shot into each target.

Owing to the fact that none of us shoot particularly regularly outdoors, this match represented a steep learning curve for those of us for whom this outdoor shooting was all new and those more experienced of us who had to remember what we were supposed to be doing. It was a great competition that presented Tamsin and Matt with their first outdoor experience, and Jonny with his first 100 yds experience. None of us did astoundingly well, except perhaps Tamsin, who proudly took away the Phyllis Green Trophy (top lady in C/D class).

The Bisley Weekend Aggregate

A couple of City shooters, Gordon Scruton and Jonathan Rowe, decided to not just do the ELEY final but go up and do the whole weekend aggregate of the annual Bisley meeting. This involved three cards at 50m and three cards at 100 yds, making a sum-total of 120 competition shots (thus 1,200 points in total). This was an awful lot of fun and we'd encourage as many of you as possible to set aside the weekend next year to join us. There was camping involved, BBQing and lots of the infamous 'Bisley wind' to throw the shots off.

Particular highlights in the shooting over the weekend were Jonny's high placing in C Class at 50m and, to a lesser extent, Gordon's placement in A Class for his 50m.
The Dacorum Open Handicap Shoot

A little time after Bisley weekend, a few more shooters decided to go up to Buckinghamshire for a handicap shoot, this handicap was based on a shooter's declared average. Much like handicaps in golf, this is a way for shooters with different levels of skill to enjoyably compete against each other. This competition marked a couple more firsts for Portsmouth City shooters - for Mike McCormick it marked his first time shooting at 100 yards, and for Tom Sommerville it was his first outdoor shoot entirely.
This annual competition marks one of the last competitions of the outdoor summer season. A Scottish match is one that is only at 100 yards, and in this case was 60 competition shots. Portsmouth shooters, Ian Cooper and Gordon Scruton took part in this competition, both in A Class, and while neither got close to winning the class (well done to Cliff Richards of Havant for that) it was pretty close between the two of them.
Portsmouth City was proud to send 5 shooters to the NSRA/ELEY final this year. This was an excellent number to get to the 50m outdoor final from a total of 12 shooters who took part in the competition. For J. Rowe and M. McCormick, this competition was about besting their scores and standing compared to last year, while at the same time being in higher, more competitive divisions. While for the ladies, this was L. Haskett and T. Rowe’s first time shooting in these finals and thus their first experience of the infamous wind on the Century Range.

Thursday night saw the long overdue final of the Arthur Lee Cup. Back in April, we won the local final against Portsmouth Railway Rifle Club, the local final being the decider of which Portsmouth & District team would go on to represent the association in its match against the Southampton & District Association.

In the Southampton & District corner was our old rivals, Sarisbury, who have frustrated our efforts in a few recent competitions. Here's how we did:
So unfortunately we were not able to take the cup home this year, and if we're completely honest, our scores were not as good as our previous matches against Railway (1163) and against West Meon (1169). Congratulations to Ilya Kuprov for his overall score of 199.

This was a bittersweet match for Portsmouth City as it marked the last match for our captain, Marian Nevatte, who a little while ago moved to Havant Rifle Club but came back to finish the Arthur Lee season with us. Many thanks, Marian.
As for what we've all been up to over the summer, the overall summer report is on its way! So watch this space.Gordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04396346103987420775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8468965739381456179.post-47193091865536083582016-05-11T17:55:00.000+01:002016-05-11T17:55:27.881+01:00The Duttson and Elizabethan Cup Finals 2016Last week, the team took part in two finals, a result of some great shooting over the course of the winter season. The first meeting was for the Duttson Cup.

The 2016 Duttson Cup

On Tuesday, it was the semis and final for a competition that has been running since 1936. Some of you may remember from last year that City once again reached the final and ultimately lost to Sarisbury (just like the year before). This time round Sarisbury didn't reach the semis but unfortunately, that didn't end up being to City's benefit. As there were only three teams in attendance (Chichester, Portsmouth Railway, and Portsmouth City) names were drawn from a hat and Chichester got direct entry to the final and it was left for the two Portsmouth teams to go up against each other in the semi-final.

City seems to face Railway quite a lot at these events - we were up against Railway in the semi-final of the Duttson last year, and this year we shot (and won) against Railway in the local Arthur Lee Cup final. This is how it went this time.

So congratulations to Chichester and many thanks to Wayne Dugan and HMS Excellent Rifle Club for the use of their range.

The 2016 Elizabethan Cup

This Hampshire competition was slightly different in that the two teams, Portsmouth City A and Pinewood B shot on their own ranges at different times but both under the watchful eye of Sarisbury's Terry Gleed, who very kindly organises this competition each year.

The Elizabethan is a handicap competition, meaning that it is incumbent on the shooters to achieve a specific score (not 100) that is declared before they shoot. It was a team of 6, shooting 2 cards each. As we weren't shoulder-to-shoulder, we don't know Pinewood B's specific scores but here's how we shot:

This evening was the local final of the Arthur Lee Cup. Last year, we reached the local final but were narrowly beaten by Fareham. This year we managed to get to the final once again but were up against Portsmouth Railway Rifle Club. The match was kindly officiated by Wayne Dugan of HMS Excellent Rifle Club and was held at Havant.

This match is a little different from our normal shoulder-to-shoulder matches. This was teams of 6 (instead of the usual 8), shooting 2 cards each (instead of 1), and unlike our other competitions, every team member's scores counted. Here's how it went:

So Portsmouth City goes on to represent Portsmouth & District this year against Sarisbury, who will represent Southampton & District. Well done to Sarah Hart and Adam Nevatte for their tonnes.

Well, that's the end of the Portsmouth & District shoulder-to-shoulder season. PCRC's last match was at home this week against Wickham and we're pleased to say it was another win and a good score for our aggregate. Here are the results:
The team's average for this season was 486.7 (a whole point improvement on our average from last year, 485.7). We have yet to find out where we stand in the overall ranking for the league (we'll have to wait to know the outcome of a few other matches from this week).

Special congratulations go to Richard Ashman of Portsmouth City, who managed to turn up just before we were about to turn off the lights and shot a perfectly respectable 97 with the range to himself.

Our final stats for the 2015/16 season are as follows:

14 matches (11 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses)
Total League Points: 23
Aggregate Score: 6814

Scoring Team Average (top 5 shooters of each match): 486.7

Top Shoulder-to-Shoulder Average: 97.25 (Gordon Scruton, 12 matches)

The competition for the best individual average was once again close this year, with 6 shooters all being within half a point of each other:

1st: Gordon Scruton (97.25, 12 matches)
2nd: Sarah Hart (97.08, 12 matches)

3rd: Ian Cooper (97.07, 14 matches)

4th: Richard Ashman (97.00, 10 matches)

5th: Marian Nevatte (96.93, 14 matches)
6th: Adam Nevatte (96.86, 14 matches)

Special thanks go to Marian Nevatte for her final season as captain of the team, and to the following shooters for attendance and participation at all 14 matches:

Ian Cooper

Marian Nevatte

Adam Nevatte

No shooters managed to get counted in for every match (going to show that we all have our bad shoots and that at the end of the day it's the team result that matters). However, the most consistently counted in shooter this season was Marian Nevatte, who was counted in 12 out of the 14 matches she shot.

We'll update everyone once we find out our overall standing for the championship. We were runners up last year, so we'll be hoping to match if not improve on that. Fingers crossed.
