Arthur Lee Final (Sarisbury vs Portsmouth City)

Thursday night saw the long overdue final of the Arthur Lee Cup.  Back in April, we won the local final against Portsmouth Railway Rifle Club, the local final being the decider of which Portsmouth & District team would go on to represent the association in its match against the Southampton & District Association.

In the Southampton & District corner was our old rivals, Sarisbury, who have frustrated our efforts in a few recent competitions.  Here's how we did:

So unfortunately we were not able to take the cup home this year, and if we're completely honest, our scores were not as good as our previous matches against Railway (1163) and against West Meon (1169).  Congratulations to Ilya Kuprov for his overall score of 199.

This was a bittersweet match for Portsmouth City as it marked the last match for our captain, Marian Nevatte, who a little while ago moved to Havant Rifle Club but came back to finish the Arthur Lee season with us.  Many thanks, Marian.

As for what we've all been up to over the summer, the overall summer report is on its way!  So watch this space.

Portsmouth City is well represented at the Bisley National Meeting

This weekend three of our members, Marian Nevatte, Jonathan Rowe and Michael McCormick, took part in the NSRA/ELEY final up at Bisley.  These three had already proven themselves by getting through the 1st and 2nd rounds of this national competition, so now they were able to simply enjoy the experience of shooting outdoors at the annual national competition.

I'm pleased to say that Mike McCormick, in his first experience shooting outdoors, achieved 9th place in Class F.

Jonathan Rowe, taking part in his second ELEY final, bested his 7th position last year in Class F and this year achieved 4th place in Class E.

And our club captain, Marian Nevatte, did us all proud by getting 6th place in Class B!

Here were their scores (they were shooting two sets of cards at 50m outdoors).

Recent Portsmouth & District Team Results

In the lull between the winter leagues having finished and the summer leagues just getting started, there hasn't been much news recently but here's a bit of old news that I didn't get round to posting.

Portsmouth & District vs Worthing & West Sussex

In a previous post, I provided a match report on the first round of the Potter Bailey: which is an annual competition that runs between Portsmouth & District and Worthing & West Sussex rifle associations (both making up a team from their member clubs).  The first round in February saw P&D narrowly lose to W&WS (1945 points to 1953 points).

Here's how the second round went in mid-March.

So while Peter Pearce (Sarisbury) and Dave Cotton (Havant) managed to achieve possibles, unfortunately P&D wasn't able to make up the difference that Worthing & West Sussex made in the first round.

This is another competition that runs every year between the Portsmouth and Southampton teams.  This year it was very kindly hosted at Havant.  Again, it is teams of 12 (10 to count) with each person shooting two cards.  Here's how it went:

Well done to Southampton's shooters for some very impressive scores.  Portsmouth shooters will definitely have to pull their socks up for next year!

One other important piece of news that was announced was that our own Marian Nevatte would be stepping down as captain of the Portsmouth & District team.  Having taken on new responsibilities in the wake of Mary Maiden's passing, Marian has decided to hand over this particular role to someone else (who will be confirmed at the next P&D AGM).  All shooters gave a great round of applause in thanks for Marian's 8 years of work as the captain of the association team.
